Gimp has a pretty good reputation in the non-mac world, so you could look at http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/ and see if it can help you out.

How simple? If you are creating it in PowerPoint then maybe you could use Inkscape instead. If you have set up your page and have the elements 'floating' then when it is exported (to PNG) the background is transparent. If you are doing some image editing then Seashore is a simple program that handles alpha channels (transparency) and is based on GIMP. Export to PNG. It runs natively on the Mac, GIMP uses X11.
