You can use a big image on a smaller product.
http://www.tutortanith.com/aspectratio.htm Your image has to be exactly the right shape to take best advantage of bleed products (e.g. colored background). White backgrounds don't look all that great on bleed products but white backgrounds are more flexible in what the can be placed on and still more or less fit OK. http://www.tutortanith.com/#imagesize |

TYSM Tanith! I'll go read that ---------- Life is Boring Without Color ----------------------------------------- |

Okay, I did a lot of reading.
I don't think I grasped it properly...LOL If I am understanding correctly you can resize an image smaller to fit on other things, but it's probably not the best idea? Correct? ---------- Life is Boring Without Color ----------------------------------------- |

You can resize it smaller. Not a problem. You don't want to resize bigger. You "probably" don't want to put something like a square t-shirt image on a bumper sticker.
My personal opinion is that putting square images on round items is often (not always) a mistake, even if they technically fit. It depends upon your tolerance for "good enough." |

I made this mistake when I came here. I would make an image for that exact product and not for the largest size. I still cannot believe that a 3000x3000 image can be put on a 4.25in sq tile and NOT have some problem with quality. But there was a link to a 'chart' showing all the 'best' sizes that would fit many other products. It is worth looking for to save you many many minutes in creation and uploading time.

Thank you so much. I need to learn the charts. I really appreciate your help. Big Hugs ---------- Life is Boring Without Color ----------------------------------------- |

Thank you so much for your help. I don't want my items to be just good enough, I want to make sure before I design something I have the sizes, dpi, etc correct. I want my products to be of the best quality they can be. I just don't want to jump into all of this, because I am designing for two other people, as well. I want to make sure the products they sell are the best possible always. That's why I'm asking a lot of questions...LOL Now, I just need to understand what you mean about shape? Do you mean like putting text on a curve? ---------- Life is Boring Without Color ----------------------------------------- |

This may be the chart you're looking for http://www.tutortanith.com/charts/aspectRatios.htm I have it bookmarked myself. |

By shape I mean that something round and something square could be viewed as having the same aspect ratio - they would both use the same square image canvas. However they are not the same shape, and how well something fits depends upon the shape of the actual product. Consider that this image http://www.cafepress.com/DogPlay.343478117 was modified to fit the shape of the product over the apparel image http://www.cafepress.com/DogPlay.343478072 This one http://www.cafepress.com/DogPlay.82107836 was not adjusted. It looks like exactly what it is. It is a square design slapped on a round button. Adjusting that image would create a more attractive product. Or this one http://www.cafepress.com/DogPlay.90232029 That is an example of "good enough" but just barely. It "fits" but it is too square. It would be better if I made the image for the round button. I should move some of the agility obstacles out of the straight line and modify the font size / width to better fit the shape. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Tanith, |

Thank you everyone for the tips.
This is truly helpful! Hugs ---------- Life is Boring Without Color ----------------------------------------- |

Oh thank you. Now I see what you mean. I wonder? If you are making a design that will go on a round image, would it be a good idea to make a round shape and place your design on that and move the layers around on it, to get a round effect? What do you think? ---------- Life is Boring Without Color ----------------------------------------- |
