I know there is another forum discussing the consequences of loosing google base, but I haven't seen any postive or helpful information from it. I know alot of shop keepers are jumping ship. Dispite the fact google is gone what are others doing for promotion and traffic? Some one must be staying positave and creative. I do have blogs, I have squidoo, Livejournal, myspace, facebook, my own domain, etc but none of that is making up for lost traffic from base. Any help would be great!

Sounds like you are doing many good things to promote yourself online. Smiler Everything you listed are good things to try; IMO, none of them are going to replace google base however. Hopefully they will at least provide some conversions for you. Unfortunately I don't have any new suggestions beyond what you listed, other than to think seriously about broadening your selling base if you have not done so already.

Not likely considering the approach they already took, but you never know.

The Google Merchant Center is the same as Google Base for product listings. (which is what we post for CP products.) My CP stuff was eliminated from Google Base/Merchant Center just last week, so you'll probably have to find a new way to promote.

Google is not doing it to CafePress alone. They are doing it to all of the "marketplace" type of sites, probably to minimize duplication and to provide a better experience for their users. And from their perspective, I understand and agree. I see page upon page that keep having the same item pop up on their product searches. They are doing this for all POD sites as well as other similar type of marketplace sites. The listings can only come from the owner of the site itself, not the different marketplace listings.

Yes, CP is different in that they have bazillions of products and they don't or can't upload them all to GB so many of us are left without any listing there.

Actually, since Google requires that CP set up separate accounts/feeds for each Shop within CP, I suspect they're only doing it for, shall we say, "profitable" shops.
This probably leaves out Basics, and all but the top-volume Premiums.

I did a search on both Google Shopping and the CP MarketPlace for mugs under a certain keyword classification.
In CP's MarketPlace, over a dozen mugs popped up.
On Google Shopping, only ONE CP mug showed, but so did over a dozen from other PoDs!

Anecdotal, admittedly, but I think it shows a trend...

Now, if CP were to provide a way for us to generate Google feeds, even if it were only for opted-in shops...

I'm not sure that Google is requiring a separate feed for each "shop" as the marketplace doesn't look like separate shops. They are all listed as "shop.cafepress.com/item/prodno".

Not sure exactly how CP choses to upload what they do, but I would base it on a mixture of sales, current trending keywords and a mix of new products.

I have a number of opted-in Basic shops.
No merchandise from them is in the GoogleBase feed.

Just curious. But why wouldn't Cafepress upload all products. What advantage would it be for them not to when their competitors might take that route. I realize this wouldn't help with the SHOP vs MP question, as they likely would be MP listings, but there doesn't seem to be a great reason to me not to list them all and certainly not that daunting a task from an IT standpoint.

Where am I going wrong with that thought, folks, it's still early and perhaps I'm not thinking straight?

Because of the sheer volume. Just did a search for "funny" and got this:

Showing: 1 – 28 of 862,000 Funny designs available on 29,500,000 products

Which is clearly either a limit or an estimate, but it shows you how many things are on CP. They probably couldn't upload them all from a bandwidth standpoint for one. By the time the feed uploaded, it would be time to upload another.

I've seen similar complaints at some other PODs that are now grown to the point where they have a massive inventory as well.

I think you're right Teesed, but in the current Google universe, that's probably something that should be done. Here's hoping they're trying to figure out how to accomplish it. If not, others might, or perhaps already have.
