When I started I thought that of course "web safe" would be a good choice. I could not have been more wrong. There is a very fundamental difference between print and the computer display. The computer display colors come from emitted light, created by various amounts of red, green and blue (RGB). Printed color comes from reflected light, from Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black (CMYK). Because they have a different basis each group has some colors the other does not. Files created for the computer create colors using RGB. But when it is printed it is converted to CMYK. If the file to be printed has RGB colors that are not in CMYK then the closest CMYK colors are chosen, which may not be very attractive. Many "web safe" colors will come out looking dull and greyish. The brighter and more vibrant the color on screen, the more likely it will shift when printed. What you need is to select colors are that are in both RGB and CMYK. Then what you see on screen will be very close to what actually gets printed.

yea it takes a bit of trial/error to get the colors to look as good on the pc as it does on the merchandise itself. One good tool to use too if you can afford the ink is to print out a copy of a design you make and whatever colors you see there are a pretty close match to what will happen when you add the design to merchandise in your store.
