Don’t you hate it when you find a typo in the book or story you’re reading? Doesn’t the typo make you question the truth of what you’re reading, and the competence of whoever wrote it?

Your readers think the same way. But I could help you avoid all this by copy editing your manuscripts.

I would like to apply for any copy editing or proofreading jobs at your company. I can also do any freelance work you have.

I have experience in editing my own news and feature stories, and am familiar with AP style. I can also catch errors in grammar, spelling and punctuation that could embarrass your company.

I have a bachelor‘s degree in Print Journalism, News-Editorial emphasis, from MTSU. I have experience in writing news and feature stories for the Murfreesboro, TN, Daily News Journal, the MTSU student paper Sidelines and the UTK student paper The Daily Beacon. My last reporting job was for the Union City, TN, Messenger.

I hope that you will consider adding me to your team. Please contact me by email or phone to set up any interviews or any further actions. I look forward to hearing from you soon, and thank you for considering me for a position at Thomas Nelson.

Yours truly,
Scott Livingood

I'm a little wary of copyeditors that promise the earth, that can turn your piece of dross into into a blockbuster, that wield such power that can change your whole story, and with your consent, and charge you a hefty price for doing so. Remember, millions of kids read and loved Harry Potter, but only a few found mistakes. For example, most people recognise words by their first and last letter, they skim-read. check this out: 'N*w is t*e t*ime f*r a*l g**d m*n to c*me to the a*d of the p*rty.' or Th* q*ick br*wn f*x j*mped ov*r t*e l*zy d*g's b*ck. People make mistakes, the person that never made a mistake never made anything. My books are full of mistakes. Fair comment is your books are so boring they send me to sleep every night. Fine. Unfair comment: your have twenty two split infinatives. Your sentences are too long. Rubbish, with books anything goes. Just read it a couple of times, correct, and go to print. Stuff perfection, accept you are human, and print. Habve a glorious day. avaganda2

Avaganda,

Your comment was straight to the point, and your right people
Make mistakes - even your local newspapers do it all the time.
But Literature is a caft, people go to school for many years to
Be able to proof read or correct grammacial (just kidding), I mean gramatical mistakes. So in all fairness if they "the copyeditors"
Promise the earth - then they better deliver right.

I'm not an english major nor a copyeditor at all, I'm just a crazy
Puerto Rican with two bits to add. Be nice.

Thank you

Depends on what you are writing about. One mispelled word can cause you to lose credibility. If it's in your ad copy or on the cover of your book you lose all credibility as an expert in anything. At the very least it makes you look sloppy and unprofessional, even if it's just a coloring book.

Bad writing can really get you in trouble, just look at all the "mistook what you meant" posts on this board for proof of that.

I highly recommend using a good proofreader (or three) if you are writing a book that you are serious about selling.

Sorry, moderator. I had to put my 2 cents in here. Maybe you should just delete these comments and edit into the topic starter some good reasons to use an editor / proofreader.

I feel I must apologise for my comments concerning copy-editors, I was bitten by a supposed copy-editor some years back. 'Send me your manuscript, and a cheque, and I will make you a bestseller.' I sent my manuscript and only ten percent deposit. The cheque was cashed, and I never saw my MS again. I imagine worms and woodlice are feasting on my work of art. Obviously, not all copy-editors are like that, and it was wrong of me to suggest so. Of course, there are good copy-editors out there, honest and conscientious, it's just finding them. And larryphillips is right, mistakes on your front or back covers can decimate your credibility, and sales, people are more forgiving on the content. But certainly would not buy your book if your blurb contained numerous mistakes, was incomprehensible, or just too busy, (meaning too much to take in in an initial ten second viewing). To finish, thank you Swiftchancellor for your two bits, I've met many Puerto Ricans, and I think they are fantastic, lovely people. I'm a scouser myself. I know we have a dubious reputation, but not all of us are bad.

Hello all -- I'm new here (first post too). Smiler

Please get your work "looked at" before printing. Get a regular proofreader/editor who will find typos, fix confusing sentences, and note things that you may have missed. Hmmm, someone like ME, perhaps ....

If anyone is promising you a "bestseller" they're not a proofreader/editor, they're a development editor (hopefully with a track record) or a scamster.

I'm at www.wordranch.com. Thanks for reading!
