Certainly no expert in Illustrator but I generally just open an ai file in PS. (Yes you can. Just drag it from bridge) It will ask you what size and resolution you want. Once open it's rasterized but I "usually" open it larger than I need then just size it down. The resolution shouldn't change (unless you change it).
