Ah, the old tragic wand trick.
If you're trying to delete a white background (or whatever color) on the background layer it has to be unlocked. You can either double click on it to unlock it or (better) duplicate it and delete it on the duplicate layer. What I've seen is most people with this problem forget to -begin- by making the image into a background layer - Could this be the problem?
